Reflections On My Music Life

When we first start listening to music, it’s usually something based off of what our parents preferred at that time. Ironically, that usually changes as we grow older. I initially started singing at the age of 10, but it wasn’t until I reached young adolescent age that I found my individuality in creating and singing music. Though I’ve been refining my sound over time, there have been various phenomenal artists that I have often been influenced by. Some of which include artists like Glady’s Knight, Whitney Houston, Monica, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, Lauren Hill and Yolanda Adams just to name a few.

The process of creating music has always been a magical and exhilarating experience for me. When I write my artistic expression is like a healing practice of mindfulness that improves my well-being. In that moment I am fully engaged in the music that I create and it provides a way of escape for me to deal with life’s adversities. Put simply, it has become an outlet for me. It has a way of sharpening my focus while allowing me to shape both my joy and pain into beauty from the depths of my soul.

My life without music is like the rain with no sunshine. It’s hard to appreciate the sunshine with no rain and vice versa. When we begin to understand the relationship between two things that will forever be bonded, we tend to develop a strong admiration for it. That’s how I feel when it comes to music because there’s a strong tie that binds between it and life itself. Music speaks when there are no words, regardless if I’m the vocalist behind it or just the one lending an ear.

In the process of obtaining my degree in music, I have developed an even better appreciation for it. This is also a result of my substantial exposure to it, and not just in one particular style or the styles I’m accustomed to. Learning to analyze and interpret a variety of different pieces of music has given me a new perspective in creating my own music. Additionally, it has increased my intellectual curiosity about music in general. In conclusion, there are various genres of music and trailblazing artists who have paved the way to where I am today - and to a greater extent, so many people who have had a major impact in my life with their guidance and encouragement along the way. Knowing this motivates me all the more to consider where else it can take me as I follow my own dream of becoming an accomplished artist in the music industry.
